This initiative seeks to support children in vulnerable conditions in public schools and colleges in this region.

The Medical Duarte Foundation promotes the Huertas Caseras project, which directly benefits 160 families from Durania, Bochalema, Toledo and Labateca.

In 2022, students from public sector schools and colleges in the province of Ricaurte learned to plant beans, lettuce, paprika, cilantro, beans and tomatoes: foods that were ultimately used for their own consumption.

This initiative is led by Edgar Medina, a social worker, who was in charge of providing advice and permanent support to these children and families, in order to promote entrepreneurship and sustainable agricultural activities in these vulnerable areas of Norte de Santander.

“You see the joy of the children when the first plant is born,” said Medina, who added that these projects are welcomed with a lot of love and it is hoped that each year the Medical Duarte Foundation can reach more municipalities in the northeastern region.

“Every year as a foundation we consider new ideas related to education, agriculture, sports and health that help families in the rural area of the department,” Medina concluded.
